The Service

Meals On Wheels Gorey & Courtown operates four days a week (Monday-Thursday), excluding bank holidays. Delivery times are between twelve noon and one o’clock each day. The service closes for Christmas week, but offers a special delivery of meals/treats on Christmas Day and Saint Stephens Day.

The meals, consisting of a dinner and dessert, are prepared locally in a commercial kitchen under strictest health and environmental standards and are subject to regular inspection by the statutory authorities to ensure compliance with statutory requirements. The service can cater for special dietary needs, eg. diabetic, gluten free, vegetarian diets, and individual tastes are also provided for.

The daily charge per meal is three euro (€3.00), or twelve euro per week (€12.00), or fifty euro per month (€50.00). Payments can be made in cash, by EFT or by standing order, details are provided in advance of starting with the service. A statement is issued to all service users at the end of each month. The cost of meals are subsidised from a grant from the Health Service Executive Older Persons Services

Referrals

Meals On Wheels Gorey accepts service user referrals from :

  • HSE Primary Care Service (Public Health Nurses) following an assessment of the person’s needs and suitability:
  • Hospital Health Professionals, supporting the discharge of persons, who would benefit from the service, temporarily while recuperating or on a permanent basis;
  • The service maintains a list of additional sources of referrals, these organisations/charities can make referrals for persons identified though their work.

The recipient of the meals will be asked to complete a service user form detailing next-of-kin and details of any food allergies or special dietary requirements.

All referrals are added to the service waiting list and in order, are used to fill a recipient space when it arises. Given the nature of the service, its difficult to estimate a start date – the service manages referrals and waiting lists as per service capacity levels.
